Chapter 2 Networking

As the assumption that there is not any software dedicated to maintaining the network and its operating system fully, WSBS provides a unified administrative interface designed to manage your server to meet the business requirements.

A server is a device that provides services such as printer server, web server. These services should meet core business needs, including security (integrity, availability, confidentiality); email and collaboration; an internet connection; sharing data; faxing.

A client is a device that avails itself of a server's services. Normally, they are perfectly capable computers on their own.

The roles of network operating systems are to manage:
Remote file system
Running of shared applications
input and output to shared network devices
CPU scheduling of networked processes

Server needs to be high powered, robust operating system, reliable hardware, do not want to have to reboot their system, and varying security needs including certain level of data protection and configurable security level for different services. On a WSBS network, clients can run win95, 98, Me, NT, 2000, XP as their supported operating systems.

Windows Server 2003 ideal features for a small business server include:
easy installation that is almost fully automated
a robust yet easy-to-administer security model using Active Directory
NTFS file system that fully supports long file names, dynamic error recovery, shadow copies, user space limitations, and security
support for a broad range of hardware and software
supports only Domain model excluding 'Workgroups'

'Workgroups' is a logical grouping computers that gives equal privileges to each member of group to share resources with each other member of the group, that are need to be set up as peer-to-peer networks by determining what will be shared and who will have access. .

'Workgroups' becomes difficult to manage:
when necessary to give different levels of access to different users
passwords (password policy needs to force user to set up good password)
when workgroup becomes too large, it is difficult to locate the resources they need
nonexistent of control and centralized administration
limited security

By using domains, management is simplified and centralized on the server, reducing the complexity and security problems caused by having to manage users, resources, and passwords across multiple clients. It is a logical grouping just like workgroup, but grouping users who are connected by more than the cables between their computers. The difference is the existence of a server for the group that provides a single point of administration and control.

By using Server Management application admin can simply add the new user including:
creating the user's mailbox
setting up their home folder
adding them to security and distribution groups
configuring their share point access
setting up disk quotas, and even configure a client computer for them.

Permission to access resources is granted to individual user or a group of users , but not to individual computer. For the restricted resources, you need to log on to only a single workstation to access to a sensitive information or directory to make change across the entire domain. .

Access control
workgroup has two options 'share' or 'not share', but WSBS provides discretionary access control, which allows, for example, some users to create a document or make changes to an existing one while other users can only read the document and still other users can't even see it as it has three options 'an individual file' or 'files within a directory' or 'the entire directory'

Domain components:
domain controller
member server (optional)
workstations or clients

domain controller is the main computer on WSBS domain, that will be the only server and host Active Directory and all components of WSBS, as well as acts as the file and print server for the domain. All components in the domain must authenticate to the domain controller, and all domain security is controlled by it.

Member servers are optional that might be in the domain, and can be used to spread network resource load around so that the domain controller does not carry the whole load, and they can even be the Exchange or SQL server host if you buy separate, stand-alone versions of these products. Unfortunately, the bundling and licensing of WSBS 2003 allows the installation of the WSBS CD versions on only the main WSBS computer.

Workstations or clients must be running Win95 or later version, but in most networks they will be running Win XP professional.
